My biggest takeaway this week: Why Your Business Needs a Value Ladder

The idea and marketing strategy behind a value ladder continues to amaze me!  Essentially, a value ladder is a framework for mapping out your product or services visually in an ascending order based on value and price.

A value ladder allows you to cater to your clients needs no matter where they are at in your value ladder.

At the very bottom of your value ladder, you want to offer a product or service that is practically free. The idea behind this is to give them exposure to who you are, and provide some sort of value to them.

For example, this could be a free pdf download which addresses an issue your client may be facing in return for their name and email address. Now as your client ascends your value ladder, the value and the price will increase accordingly.

The mistake that many businesses make is that they limit their products and services, but more importantly, don’t look at their products and services from the lens of a value ladder.

For example, imagine you are in the fitness industry and provide workout videos to help get your clients in the best shape of their life. If the only thing you offer is a 8-weeks total body workout video series for $49, you would be missing out on so much sales. Yes, you could try to get as many people to purchase your $49 product but what if we shifted our perspective and looked at it from a value proposition.

For example, someone who has completed the 8-weeks course has received tremendous value from you. Now, what if you could offer them something more from a value perspective that would make them feel even greater about themselves and see even better results!

Chances are really high that they will opt-in for this additional upsells! The goal is to keep moving them up the ladder and provide some amazing value.

For example, our next step could be a subscription to a personal coaching program where your clients have direct access to a certified coach who will create customized solutions that will get your clients the Hollywood physique they are looking for.

See, it’s that simple!

That my friend is the beauty of a value ladder! We as marketers and entrepreneurs have to start looking at our services strategically and from a value ladder perspective.

At Sunan, we think of our design and marketing services the same way. Here is a illustration as to how we structure our subscriptions around a value ladder:

As you can see, the first step in our value ladder is to provide something at no cost but provides value for the reader. For us, these are our detailed guides that can be found here. In exchange for the guide, we collect a person’s name and email address. Within these guides, we are hyper focused in providing amazing value that is centered around graphic design and digital marketing.

Now as you start moving up the ladder, we start providing more and more value to our clients that will help move the needle in their life and business.

Now all the way at the top of our value ladder, we offer a personalized coaching program that provides even more value and has the highest price tag in terms of our offerings and services.

A big mistake most people make is to focus on the price instead of the value. It’s called a VALUE ladder, not a price ladder for a reason. You should focus on your client and how your different services deliver value to them.

Now it’s your turn: Look at the products and services that you are offering and see how you can leverage the value ladder to provide more value to your client. Your goal at the end of the day is to deliver more value to your client and make more money in the process. Truly a win-win scenario for you and your client!

Time to level up!
